The Poison of Sin

The Poison of Sin [Outline]

Consider how we store and display poison in bottles with labels; how it is able to damage us

The serpent’s venom is the obvious comparison in the Scriptures

Psalm 58:4

They have venom like the venom of a serpent; Like a deaf cobra that stops up its ear,

Proverbs 23:32
At the last it bites like a serpent, And stings like a viper.

Isaiah 14:29

“Do not rejoice, O Philistia, all of you, Because the rod that struck you is broken; For from the serpent’s root a viper will come out, And its fruit will be a flying serpent.

Jeremiah 8:17

“For behold, I am sending serpents against you, Adders, for which there is no charm, And they will bite you,” declares the Lord.

Romans 3:13
“Their throat is an open grave, With their tongues they keep deceiving,”“The poison of asps is under their lips”;

Sin as poison

Deuteronomy 29:18

so that there will not be among you a man or woman, or family or tribe, whose heart turns away today from the Lord our God, to go
and serve the gods of those nations; that there will not be among you a root bearing poisonous fruit and wormwood.

Amos 6:12
Do horses run on rocks? Or does one plow them with oxen? Yet you have turned justice into poison And the fruit of righteousness into wormwood,

Deuteronomy 32:32-33
“For their vine is from the vine of Sodom, And from the fields of Gomorrah; Their grapes are grapes of poison, Their clusters, bitter. “Their wine is the venom of serpents, And the deadly poison of cobras.

The poison can be external or come from within yourself

2 Kings 4:39-40

Then one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine and gathered from it his lap full of wild gourds, and came
and sliced them into the pot of stew, for they did not know what they were. So they poured it out for the men to eat. And as they
were eating of the stew, they cried out and said, “O man of God, there is death in the pot.” And they were unable to eat.

Hosea 10:4
They speak mere words, With worthless oaths they make covenants; And judgment sprouts like poisonous weeds in the furrows of the field.

James 3:8

But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.
